Magdala - the hometown of Mary the Magdaline

In September 2009, during the construction of a pilgrimage site, the first century synagogue of Magdala was discovered.

Matthew tells us "Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom" (Matt. 4:23)

We live in an exciting time!  For close to 2000 years the ruins of Magdala lay undisturbed - but today it is available for us to see and experience ourselves.

Magdala was a wealthy fishing village on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee.

We are told by Luke (Luke 8:1-3) that Mary the Magdalene was considered a follower of Jesus and supported him out of her own means. Is it possible that Mary came from one of the wealthy families that lived in this village?

Additionally, is it possible that what afflicted Mary was like what afflicts many in the wealthy western world today - affluenza. Many scholars believe this is the case. Mary, like many of us, may have come from a comfortable wealthy family that skewed our view of God and what it means to participate in the Kingdom of God.

The site of Magdala is a once in a lifetime place to visit!

Synagogue of Magdala.
A stone used for reading the Torah scrolls. This area of the synagogue was used for a school. All synagogues have a small school room attached.
Magdala was a relatively wealthy city due to fishing and their salted-fish. These shops in the center of town have pools for the sale of live fish.
