"He who tends a fig tree will eat its fruit,
And he who cares for his master will be honored"
 Prov. 27:18, NASB
In the first century, the shade of a fig tree was a popular location for a Rabbi and his disciples to gather to discuss the finer points of the Bible.

Fig trees were also an important source of natural sweetness for a family.  A biblical image for the future age of peace is that each man will sit under his own fig tree (Micah 4:9). An image of peace and prosperity in the land.

The writer of Prov. 27:18 is not simply giving us a lesson in horticulture and how to harvest more fruit - the focus of the Proverb is the parallel verse about those who care for their master.

Honoring your Lord is like tending a fig tree. It's hard work but in the end, you enjoy the sweetness of the fruits of His wisdom.

Based on the proverb above (Prov. 27:18), and the tradition of studying Torah in the shade of a fig tree - a colloquial expression emerged that to “sit under a fig tree” was to study under a rabbi or teacher (the disciples call Jesus, “Master and Lord” - Jn. 13:13).

Studying the Bible also takes patience and discipline. Your reward is great though when you harvest the sweetness of God’s word.

At Fig Tree Ministries we invite you to join us “under the fig tree” to taste the sweet fruit that the bible has to offer.

Our prayer is that the teachings of our ministry will help you open up the world of the Bible and gain a deeper understanding of the biblical text.
